Day 0: The shuttle driver drops us at the Shepherd Pass trailhead, a sign and sandy trail winding into a steep canyon at the end of a very rough Jeep “road” occupied only by jack rabbits, a juvenile golden eagle, and now us. It’s 86 degrees at 6:00pm and our packs are loaded down with nine days of food. We slowly shuffle upward through a blooming desert garden before finding camp on a bluff overlooking the Owens Valley far below, just after twilight—complete with scorpions scuttling around. Check your shoes in the morning, people. #themoreyouknow

Enchanted evening after reuniting with Robin early, with me blissfully unaware of the hellscape of the Milk Creek Drainage waiting the next morning.

Views coming down from Fire Creek Pass with the very enticing (and literally named) Grassy Ridge beyond.

Evening primetime entertainment from Pumice Creek: sunset with breezy grass and hot cocoa water simmering. Not pictured: delightful SOBO campsite companions for the night.

A cozy second night with bog-front views and complimentary tent-side mosquito symphony. Bonus chipmunk neighbor who tried to abscond with my cup overnight and cracked it in spite when thwarted. 🐿

Very normal trail situation in Glacier Peak. Into the hedges I go, skin integrity be damned. #itsjustafleshwound
